“Accountability” |
Greetings everyone from somewhere in the North Sea, traversing the coastline of Norway. I am a guest speaker for the Media Research Center summer cruise… well, it isn’t exactly Texas summer. I am addressing current issues on six panel discussions over the seven days with some very stellar conservative thought leaders. However, thanks to modern technology, I can maintain my situational awareness of everything happening back in the good ol’ United States—including the start of college football season. As I was reviewing recent news feeds, I came across a very disturbing story that brought to mind the title of this week’s missive. I listened to the full recording of a North Texas Republican member of the Texas State House berating and denigrating grassroots activists and threatening Republican Party precinct chairs with lawsuits. All of this because county-level GOP committees are passing resolutions to censure their Texas State House GOP representatives for not being accountable. One would think that is a simple concept to grasp. Then another questionable occurrence happened in the Texas State House GOP caucus. We all know about the recent insidious escapade of Texas House and Senate Democrats fleeing to Illinois and Massachusetts during the special session to prevent, rather, delay the passing of midterm congressional redistricting maps. Something legal, lawful, and constitutional. And may I add, it was quite necessary given the Marxist leftist push, by lawfare, to count illegal immigrants in our recent 2022 census. However, in a vote within the Texas State House caucus, a resolution to censure those 56 Democrats who fled to bust quorum—a third-time repeat offense—failed to achieve the two-thirds majority. In other words, enough Texas State House Republicans (27) felt that their Democrat “colleagues” should not be held accountable. Remember, there were 36 Texas State House Republicans who broke from their own rules within the House GOP caucus and aligned with 49 Texas Democrats to “select” the current House Speaker, Dustin Burrows. I have to wonder if President Trump knew, or knows, about all of this since he just issued a blathering endorsement of Burrows. I suppose you cannot censure the very same people who helped you get elected as Speaker, even if they pull a stunt to embarrass you before the entire Nation. Has anyone heard anything further about the Democrats having their seats vacated? Losing seniority and leadership positions such as Vice Chairs of committees and Chairs of Subcommittees in the so-called Texas GOP-majority State House? It is indeed Pavlovian when you continue to reward abhorrent behavior. It is disgusting when it appears that no one is held accountable for their actions. It is as if these elected officials have forgotten that they are “public servants.” Sadly, this cancer has infected all levels of government—elected and non-elected, bureaucrats and judicial officials alike. How many more stories must we hear about mortgage fraud when Americans cannot purchase a home due to high interest rates? How many times must we read about activist judges making ideological decisions that place the lives of Americans in danger? Really—criminal illegal immigrants have constitutional rights? The only due process they should receive is “aisle, window, or middle seat” on their deportation flight. How many more government officials will be allowed to construct lies and undermine our representative democracy and constitutional Republic, yet never be held accountable? In the old Soviet Union, there existed a level of political, governmental, and other elites who formed what was known as the Politburo. The same is happening here in America now. And please, leftists, do not give me the “threat to democracy” line. That is merely your projection of your behavior on others. In our Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson wrote that government exists by the “consent of the governed.” Sadly, it appears that we are truly on the Road to Serfdom as articulated by Friedrich Hayek. We have drifted far from understanding the premise of The Law by French economist Frédéric Bastiat, and in doing so, we have created a clear and present danger of a political oligarchy. Consider Texas businessman Alex Fairley, who has pledged $20M to support lawsuits against anyone attempting to censure Texas State House Republicans—something a Republican House Member in Texas reminded a precinct chair of during the recorded conversation. Long ago, an astute Virginia Gentleman named George Mason gave us an idea of what an American elected official should be: a citizen servant, a citizen legislator. Mason wrote on June 17, 1788, “Nothing so greatly compels a man to regard the interest of his constituents than the certainty of returning to the general mass of the people from whence he was taken, where he can share in their burdens.” It was never the intent of our Founding Fathers to have a professional political class, but due to our apathy, this is where we are now. And mind you, there are those useful idiots—Vladimir Lenin’s words, not mine—who would gladly say there is nothing wrong and that we need not hold elected officials accountable. We have come to that point, as asserted by Roman statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero, where the “arrogance of officialdom” is very evident. Unfortunately, what I have stated here, most are unaware of. That leads me to the closing commentary of Greek philosopher Plato, who said, “One of the penalties for refusing to be involved in politics is that you shall be governed by your inferiors.” I would offer that we change “governed” to “ruled” and add “corrupt” as a descriptive adjective to “inferiors.” Accountability… does anyone want it?
