“Electoral Apathy and Complacency”

| “Electoral Apathy and Complacency” One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors. — Plato Just because you do not take an interest in politics doesn’t mean politics won’t take an interest in you. — Pericles The 2026 midterm primary elections in Texas are over, but there are more elections to come. There will be municipal elections that will begin at the end of April and run into early May, first Tuesday. That is the time when voters determine who will lead their local municipalities and school boards. Later in May there will be runoff elections for primary elections where no candidate achieved a 50.1% majority electoral support. One of the great responsibilities of living in a Constitutional Republic with a representative democracy is the engagement of the electorate in the democratic process. It is as Benjamin Franklin told Mrs. Powell on 17 September 1787, “You have a Republic, if you can keep it”. However, long before Franklin, astute Greek philosophers warned of the perils of not engaging in the civic duty of electoral politics. Sure, I can understand that there are many who are disgusted, turned off, by American politics. But, one must ask, who is responsible for the so-called toxic atmosphere of American politics these days. The author of our Declaration of Independence and third American president, Thomas Jefferson, once asserted, “The government you elect is the government you deserve”. First of all, the American electorate needs a good lesson in civics and political philosophy, governance. In this 250th anniversary of American independence it would benefit our Country to have a national discussion, debate, about the relationship between the individual citizen and the institution of government, after all, according to our Declaration of Independence, government exists by the consent of the governed…but what is it that the governed consents to? When the government disregards the natural rights of life, liberty, and property of the individual citizen and seeks to replace them with contrived ideological rights we should not consent. When the government seeks to disavow our rule of law and replace it with its rule, and refuse to protect the citizens and the national sovereignty, we the people should not consent. Unfortunately, there has been such a deliberate “dumbing down” of the American electorate that people are enthused and voting for that which is the antithesis of our principles and foundation of governance in our Republic. There are in the media praising Democrats out voting Republicans in the Texas 2026 midterm election primary. They are pointing to a great enthusiasm, but what is the motivation on the left side of the aisle? We have more young people believing that socialism is a viable economic model in these United States. You have the new Mayor of New York City stating in his inaugural address that, “we will replace the frigidity of rugged individualism with the warmth of collectivism”. America, and indeed Texas, are symbolic of rugged individualism, and that is what has built this great Nation to what it is in just 250 years. Those who cherish individual liberty, rights, and freedom must not become apathetic and complacent when it comes to engaging in electoral politics. We should all take up the responsibility of finding and encouraging men and women of principle and resolve to seek out elected office. I have always advocated for Veterans, real Veterans, who understood their oath of service to support and defend the Constitution…not all Veterans grasp that ideal, Sen. Mark Kelly comes to mind. As much as the Marxist left and their islamist accomplices believe themselves to be enthused and motivated, We the People should match and exceed their motivation. Theirs is a motivation rooted in everything that is wrong, and history has proven such. Ours must be a motivation that has produced the longest running constitutional Republic that the world has ever known, a great Nation. We cannot afford to be apathetic and complacent because this is not just about being governed by our inferiors, it is about being ruled by tyrants. Marxist leftists and islamists have clearly articulated and evidenced their vision for America, just look at England. When we do not show up at the polls they feel victory is at hand. And in this election cycle, we know what happened when the leftists won the House and Senate in President Trump’s first term. Proverbs 29:2 (New International Version) says it concisely, and appropriately, “When the righteous thrive, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan.” Constitutional conservative governance is righteous because it is founded upon the principles of Natural Rights theory, meaning individuals are sovereign because their rights are endowed to them by a sovereign Judeo-Christian faith heritage God. Marxism, and its subsidiaries socialism and communism, along with secular humanism and islamism, are unrighteous, wicked, because they subjugate the individual and demand submission to a collective government driven will. Our electoral apathy and complacency will enable the latter. In closing, I just have two words for Texas congressional representative Jasmine Crockett, they come from my favorite movie Tombstone. As Curly Bill Brocius said, “Well…Bye”. But to the American Marxist left and islamists I give you the words of Wyatt Earp, “Run, you curse, run! Tell them I’m coming, and hell’s coming with me.” Steadfast and Loyal. |
